YUGEN

LEINS: One thing that I thought was interesting, and I’d love to get your take on it, is it seemed to imply or have the statement that love was unable to save the clones and then it makes that comparison to human beings. You said this is a love story and that you really wanted “to do the love thing” but then it kind of comes out a pessimistic tone about the fact that love doesn’t save you.

ROMANEK: Well, but it doesn’t. Nothing does. I mean, there is nothing that’s going to allow you to not have your life come to an end. I think what I find deeply moving about the film, and maybe hopeful is too strong a word, is that she got what she wanted. They got what they wanted. They finally acknowledge their love for each other. That’s something that doesn’t happen in most people’s lives, even if they live to be 100.
